Season Overview
The 1997-98 season for Italy was defined by its successful qualification campaign for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. After finishing second in their qualifying group behind England, the team was forced into a two-legged play-off against Russia. Following a 1-1 draw in a snowy first leg in Moscow, Italy secured their place at the tournament with a 1-0 victory in the return leg in Naples.
Key Players
The team was managed by Cesare Maldini and captained by his son, Paolo Maldini. The squad featured a wealth of talent including Alessandro Costacurta, Fabio Cannavaro, Dino Baggio, Roberto Di Matteo, Christian Vieri, and Alessandro Del Piero. A 19-year-old Gianluigi Buffon notably made his senior international debut during the qualification play-off in Moscow.
