In the 2002-03 season, Olympique de Marseille mounted a serious title challenge in Ligue 1, ultimately finishing in 3rd place and securing a spot in the Champions League qualifying rounds. The club reached the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue, where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by AS Monaco.
