Season Overview
The Republic of Ireland competed in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, advancing from their group before being eliminated in the Round of 16 by Spain after a penalty shootout. Manager Mick McCarthy led the team through the World Cup, but resigned in November 2002 following a difficult start to their UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying campaign, which included defeats to Russia and Switzerland. Don Givens briefly served as caretaker manager before Brian Kerr was appointed in early 2003.
Key Players
The squad during this period featured prominent players such as striker Robbie Keane and winger Damien Duff. Robbie Keane scored three goals for Ireland in the 2002 World Cup, including a late equalizer against Germany. Damien Duff was also a key attacking threat for the team. The kit was manufactured by Umbro.
