Season Overview
Sunderland AFC's 1996-97 season saw the club competing in the First Division as they sought to challenge for promotion back to the Premier League. The campaign proved challenging as Sunderland finished outside the promotion places. The season was a transitional period for the club as they rebuilt following their recent relegation from the top flight.

The squad during this period included experienced campaigners who formed the backbone of Sunderland's First Division challenge. Manager Peter Reid oversaw team affairs as the club worked towards returning to the Premier League in subsequent seasons.
