Season Overview
The 2000-01 season saw Aston Villa secure a solid 8th place finish in the Premier League. While a title challenge was not sustained, they proved to be a difficult team to beat, recording 15 draws and only 10 losses, fewer defeats than all but the top three teams. The club also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Intertoto Cup, losing out to Celta Vigo. In the domestic cups, Villa were knocked out in the fourth round of the FA Cup by Leicester City and the third round of the League Cup by Manchester City. The season also saw the club break its transfer record with the signing of Juan Pablo Ángel for £9.5 million.
Key Players
Under the management of John Gregory, the squad featured a number of notable players. Dion Dublin finished as the team's top goalscorer with nine goals in all competitions. The team was captained by England international defender Gareth Southgate, and also included the likes of Paul Merson, George Boateng, and David James.
