Season Overview

Under manager Giovanni Trapattoni, the 1996-97 season saw Bayern Munich secure their 13th Bundesliga title, finishing two points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen. They were, however, eliminated in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal. The following 1997-98 season, they finished as runners-up in the league to the newly promoted 1. FC Kaiserslautern but were successful in winning the DFB-Pokal, defeating MSV Duisburg 2-1 in the final.

Throughout this successful period, the team was built around a core of legendary players. Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn was a commanding presence, while the squad also featured talents such as Lothar Matthäus, Jürgen Klinsmann, Markus Babbel, and Mehmet Scholl. The forward line was further bolstered by the likes of Giovane Élber and Carsten Jancker.
