Season Overview
The 2002-03 season saw Benfica secure a second-place finish in the Primeira Liga, ensuring their return to the UEFA Champions League. The team finished with 75 points, 11 behind champions Porto. It was also a season of change in management, with Jesualdo Ferreira being replaced by José Antonio Camacho in November. The club had an early exit from the Taça de Portugal in the fourth round. This was also the final season that Benfica played their home games at the original Estádio da Luz.
Key Players
Under the management of initially Jesualdo Ferreira and later José Antonio Camacho, the squad featured a number of standout performers. Simão Sabrosa was a key figure, finishing as the league's joint-top scorer with 18 goals. Other important players in the squad included Tiago Mendes, who contributed 13 league goals, Nuno Gomes, and the creative midfielder Zlatko Zahovič.
