Season Overview

During the 2001-02 season, Celta Vigo finished 5th in La Liga with 60 points, narrowly missing out on a UEFA Champions League spot. The club participated in La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Cup, exiting both cup competitions in the second rounds. The following 2002-03 season saw Celta Vigo achieve a historic 4th place finish in La Liga with 61 points. This impressive performance secured their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Key players during this period included the formidable midfield duo of Aleksandr Mostovoi and Gustavo López, alongside prolific striker Catanha. The team was managed by Víctor Fernández in the 2001-02 season, with Miguel Ángel Lotina taking the helm for the successful 2002-03 campaign.
