Season Overview
The 1996-1998 period saw Club América navigate through competitive Liga MX seasons. In the 1996-1997 season, the club had multiple managers, including Ricardo La Volpe, Carlos de los Cobos, and Jorge Solari, finishing 3rd in the Liga MX Apertura 1996 and reaching the quarterfinals of the Primera Verano 1997 after topping their group. For the 1997-1998 season, Jorge Solari, Gonzalo Farfán, and Carlos Reinoso managed the team. Club América finished 1st in the Invierno 1997 league table and made history in 1998 by becoming one of the first Mexican clubs to participate in the Copa Libertadores, advancing to the group stages before being eliminated by River Plate.
Key Players
During these seasons, Club América featured notable talents such as prolific forward Cuauhtémoc Blanco and striker Luis García, who was a top goalscorer in the Invierno 1997 tournament. Goalkeeper Oswaldo Sánchez was a consistent presence, while midfielder Kalusha Bwalya contributed with assists. Defenders Duilio Davino and Isaac Terrazas were also key members of the squad.
