Season Overview
The 1996 season marked the inaugural year for the Dallas Burn in Major League Soccer, with the team making the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. They finished second in the Western Conference before being eliminated in the MLS Cup Semifinals. In their second season, 1997, the Dallas Burn once again qualified for the playoffs. The team also achieved a significant milestone by winning the U.S. Open Cup during the 1997 season. They concluded the 1997 MLS season in third place in the Western Conference.

Under the guidance of head coach Dave Dir, the Dallas Burn featured several notable players during these seasons. Jason Kreis was a key offensive force, leading the team in scoring in 1996 and contributing significantly in 1997. Goalkeeper Mark Dodd was recognized as the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 1996 and was named to the MLS "Best 11". Other prominent players included Hugo Sanchez in 1996 and Dante Washington, who led the team in scoring in 1997.
