Season Overview
During the 2002-04 period, France, managed by Roger Lemerre and later Jacques Santini, experienced mixed fortunes. At the 2002 World Cup, the defending champions were surprisingly eliminated in the group stage without scoring a single goal. However, they recovered to win the 2003 Confederations Cup, defeating Cameroon in the final with a golden goal from Thierry Henry. At Euro 2004, their campaign ended in the quarter-finals with a loss to eventual champions Greece.
Key Players
This era featured a squad brimming with legendary talent. Zinedine Zidane orchestrated the midfield, supported by the formidable Patrick Vieira and Claude Makélélé. The attack was led by the prolific Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, while the defense was anchored by stalwarts like Marcel Desailly, Lilian Thuram, and Bixente Lizarazu.
