Season Overview
As reigning world champions, Italy entered the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with high expectations but were eliminated in the group stage. They finished bottom of their group with two draws and one loss, failing to win a single match. Following the World Cup, the team began their qualification campaign for Euro 2012, recording victories over Estonia and the Faroe Islands in late 2010. The campaign also included a goalless draw away to Northern Ireland and a match against Serbia that was awarded as a 3-0 win to Italy.
Key Players
The 2010 World Cup squad was managed by Marcello Lippi and featured a host of experienced players. Key figures included captain Fabio Cannavaro, Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi, and Gennaro Gattuso. Following the World Cup, Cesare Prandelli took over as manager for the start of the Euro 2012 qualifiers.
