Season Overview
Under manager Alex Ferguson, Manchester United secured their fourth Premier League title in five seasons in the 1996-97 campaign, finishing seven points clear of Newcastle United, Arsenal, and Liverpool. They also reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. The following 1997-98 season was less successful, as they finished second in the league, just one point behind Arsenal, and were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
Key Players
The 1996-98 era featured a blend of established stars and emerging talent. Key players included goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, defenders Gary Pallister and Denis Irwin, and midfielders Roy Keane and David Beckham. The attack was led by Eric Cantona, who retired after the 1996-97 season, alongside Andy Cole, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and new signing Teddy Sheringham for the 1997-98 campaign.
