Season Overview
The 2011-12 season began with Manchester United defeating rivals Manchester City 3-2 to win the FA Community Shield. In the Premier League, the title race went to the final day, with United finishing second to Manchester City on goal difference after both teams ended the season level on points. The club was knocked out of the FA Cup in the Fourth Round and the League Cup in the Fifth Round. After finishing third in their Champions League group, the team entered the UEFA Europa League, reaching the Round of 16.
Key Players
Sir Alex Ferguson celebrated his 25th year as manager during this campaign. The squad featured veteran players such as Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, and Paul Scholes, who came out of retirement mid-season. Wayne Rooney was the team's top goalscorer for the season, with Nani, Javier Hernández, and Danny Welbeck also key parts of the attack.
