The Netherlands co-hosted UEFA Euro 2000, where they delivered a strong performance under manager Frank Rijkaard, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament. They topped Group D, which included France, Denmark, and the Czech Republic, and advanced to the knockout stages. However, the team failed to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, finishing third in their qualification group behind Portugal and the Republic of Ireland under manager Louis van Gaal.
