Season Overview
The 2008-09 season saw the Netherlands national team compete in UEFA Euro 2008 and begin their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. At Euro 2008, under manager Marco van Basten, the team advanced from a challenging group that included Italy and France, winning all their group matches. They were ultimately eliminated in the quarter-finals by Russia. Following the tournament, Bert van Marwijk took over as coach, leading the Netherlands to a perfect record in their 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification group, becoming the first European nation to secure a spot in the tournament.
Key Players
The squad featured prominent players such as goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and midfielders Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart. Forwards like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Dirk Kuyt, and Robin van Persie were also key contributors during this period for the Dutch national team.
