Under manager Dick Advocaat, Rangers secured a dominant domestic double in the 1999-2000 season, winning the Scottish Premier League by a 21-point margin and defeating Aberdeen 4-0 to claim the Scottish Cup. The following 2000-01 season was less successful, as the team finished second in the league behind Celtic and did not win any major trophies. In both seasons, the club competed in the UEFA Champions League group stage before dropping into the UEFA Cup.
