Season Overview
The 2005 season marked the inaugural year for Real Salt Lake as an expansion franchise in Major League Soccer (MLS), joining as the league's 12th team. Coached by John Ellinger, the team played its home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Real Salt Lake finished its debut MLS season with a record of 5 wins, 22 losses, and 5 draws, placing fifth in the Western Conference and failing to qualify for the playoffs. In the U.S. Open Cup, Real Salt Lake was eliminated in the Third Round by the Minnesota Thunder.
Key Players
Key players for Real Salt Lake during their inaugural 2005 MLS season included forward Jason Kreis, who was the club's first-ever player and captain, scoring the team's first goal. Other notable squad members were midfielder Andy Williams and defender Brian Dunseth, who scored the club's first home goal. Goalkeeper D.J. Countess was also a regular presence in goal.
