Season Overview
In the 1997 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, Santos FC finished 7th in the first phase under manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo. The club also won the Torneio Rio-São Paulo in 1997. For the 1998 season, Emerson Leão took over as manager, leading Santos to a 4th place finish in the first phase of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and reaching the semi-finals. A significant achievement during this period was winning the 1998 Copa CONMEBOL, securing their first trophy in this competition by defeating Rosario Central.

Forward Viola was a key figure, becoming the top goalscorer in the 1998 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A with 21 goals.
