Season Overview
The 1996-1998 period saw Switzerland participate in their debut UEFA European Championship in 1996, where they were drawn in Group A alongside hosts England, the Netherlands, and Scotland. Under manager Artur Jorge, the team secured one point in the group stage before their elimination. Following Euro 1996, Rolf Fringer took charge as Switzerland competed in the qualifiers for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, finishing fourth in their group. Gilbert Gress later managed the team in 1998.

Key players for the Swiss national team during this era included prolific forward Stéphane Chapuisat and penalty specialist Kubilay Türkyilmaz, who scored Switzerland's first ever European Championship goal. Midfield maestro Ciriaco Sforza, defender Stéphane Henchoz, and goalkeeper Marco Pascolo were also prominent figures in the squad.
