Season Overview
The 1998 season saw Urawa Red Diamonds compete in the J.League, finishing 6th overall out of 18 clubs. The club placed 7th in the first stage and improved to a 3rd place finish in the second stage of the league campaign. In domestic cup competitions, the team reached the quarterfinals of the Emperor's Cup, where they were eliminated by Shimizu S-Pulse. In the J.League Cup, Urawa finished second in their group but did not advance to the knockout stages.
Key Players
Managed by Hiromi Hara, the squad featured several notable talents. Eighteen-year-old midfielder Shinji Ono rose to prominence, being named the J. League's best new player and selected for the league's Best XI. Other key players included forward Masayuki Okano, who was part of Japan's World Cup squad that year, and top goalscorer Kenji Oshiba.
