Season Overview
The 1999 season was a difficult one for Urawa Red Diamonds as they competed in the first year of the newly formatted two-division J.League. The club finished 15th out of 16 teams in the J.League Division 1, which resulted in their relegation to the second tier. In the domestic cups, the team reached the quarterfinals of the J.League Cup and the fourth round of the Emperor's Cup. This was a historically significant season, marking the first time the club was relegated from the top flight.
Key Players
The team was managed by Hiromi Hara, who was replaced by Aad de Mos during the season. Key forward Masahiro Fukuda finished the campaign as the club's top goalscorer with 13 goals. The squad also featured notable players such as Shinji Ono, though he missed a significant part of the season due to national team duty and a serious injury.
