Season Overview

The 2004-06 period saw the Wales national football team navigate UEFA Euro 2004 qualifiers and the early stages of the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. Under manager Mark Hughes, Wales finished second in their Euro 2004 qualifying group, advancing to the play-offs where they faced Russia. John Toshack took over as manager in November 2004, inheriting the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign where Wales were in Group 6 alongside nations including England and Poland.

Key Players

During this era, key players for Wales included the influential Ryan Giggs, prolific striker John Hartson, and dynamic forward Craig Bellamy. Midfielder Gary Speed captained the national team before retiring from international football in 2004. Other notable squad members were Simon Davies, Robert Earnshaw, and defender Danny Gabbidon.
