Season Overview
The 1998-99 season saw Benfica compete in the Primeira Divisão, the Taça de Portugal, and the UEFA Champions League. The club finished 3rd in the Primeira Divisão. In domestic cup competition, Benfica reached the Fifth Round of the Taça de Portugal. In European competition, they participated in the UEFA Champions League, progressing to the Group Stage. Graeme Souness managed the team for most of the season, with Shéu taking over as caretaker in May 1999.
